The Rotten Fruit Box

*AD – the item in this review was gifted to our household for this post. All opinions, as always, are our own.

It’s not wide knowledge that I use to work at a little, local apple orchard. When I was a teenager, I got a job at an apple orchard, working with some of the activities that happened at the venue. Eventually, I ended up working within the grading part of the store. Grading fruit is an important part of selling fruit or vegetables. It’s basically when someone picks up each and every bit of fruit that is brought in and checks it over. They need to make sure the fruit have stems, is the right color, has no holes or bruises, looks perfect, etc. A lot of the grading process is literally just looks. Graded fruit also couldn’t be picked up from the ground. Once they are graded, grade A apples are bagged and sold, while apples that did not hit grade A, where used for other things. Wine, apple cider, apple pie, apple sauce – being a small and local farm, the owners needed to use these discarded apples to continue to help their profits. The Rotten Fruit Box actually takes fruit that has touched the ground and turns them into freeze dried fruit snacks!

The Rotten Fruit Box works with small farms, just like the orchard that I worked at, looking to purchase their perfectly good, fallen fruit, dry them, package them up and then sell them through subscription boxes to be eaten by people like you and me. Leaving fruit to rot on the ground actually causes greenhouse gasses, something that isn’t good for the world, so by collecting and re-selling these fruit, it’s actually better for the environment. The bags of fruit are just that – only fruit – dried fruit and nothing more added to it.

We tried the Freeze Dried Variety Fruit Box with 12 packets of fruit with in it. There are tons of options on the site from picking the individual fruit within your box, picking the number of packets of fruit you get and selecting different subscriptions. You can just get a one off box or have them delivered monthly if you eat through your box too fast. The fruit is always seasonal, so the box that we have had; blueberries, strawberries, bananas, pineapple, sour cherries, raspberries and a Very Berry mix. The Very Berry mix is the best mix for just snacking on, straight out of the bag, but all of these fruit are delicious. They are dried in a way that they almost crunch when you eat them, but are still easy to eat and are not chewy in any way. All of these dried fruits can just be eaten out of the bag – they are sweet and addictive in a lot of ways. They’ve been a hit with everyone in our family and are a good quality, quick and easy snack to just pour into a bowl and hand.

The Rotten Fruit Box

Over the next little while, we are going to be using some of these dried fruits to decorate some chocolates and cakes, as well as to just eat as a healthy, fruit snack that is perfect when you crave something sweet. You can put them on your yogurt or in portage in the morning, add them to cereal or mix them into frosting. There is so many fruits that came in the box, about two or three of each type, which has been so fun to try out and enjoy! Not only does this box support small farmers, but it’s a fun snack that’s just a bit different too.

You can use the code JUPITER10 at checkout for $10 off any order.
