Mountains from my Hometown | Dream of Mountains Challenge

I grew up in a very small town in Upstate NY. Despite it being small, it was right on the edge of the Adirondack Foothills, best known for their beautiful mountain ranges. This time of year, I think about the mountains a lot. In the fall, you see, the mountain range starts dancing with color and life. There are some amazing trees all crisp and colorful, waiting for the season to change. Some of my fondest memories are my grandmother driving around, just to take a look at the trees. When I heard about AliKats’ Dream of Mountains Challenge, I wanted to share my reasons why I miss the mountains.

Mountains

When you are surrounded by mountain tops, you don’t ever imagine flat places where that isn’t quite how things look. When I moved to England, one of the first surprises was not seeing a mountain range in every direction I looked. Sure, there are hills where I live now, but it is nothing like the breath taking mountain ranges I use to live in. I love the feel of the mountains, the trails that take you through them, all of the trees… It’s just such a beautiful site.

Mountains

Just this morning I was thinking about how the mountain rage changes, as I wanted to go ice skating but can’t during this lockdown. Ice skating, for me, was one of the many activities done in the winter on the lakes that were present in the Adirondack foothills. We would strap on ice skates and just go out, carving up the ice and making paths in the snow this time of year. I have made it a point to go ice skating every year now that I am an adult, and though the ice is much smoother than a lake, I still quite miss the beautiful surroundings and peacefulness that comes with skating on a lake with only your friends.

Another favorite winter activity, which can only really take place on the mountain range, is ice fishing. I use to get an ice fishing license each and every year, sitting on the water, drilling a massive hole, and then fishing in it. Winter is always a time of reflection, and the silence that the mountains have, as well as their beauty, always keeps me thinking back to them.
